Men’s Soccer Topples Mountaineers 3-0 in Senior Day Win

The Covenant men's soccer team celebrated their seniors today as the Scots wrapped up regular season play. Will Kenas, Anthony Calbo, Cale McLarnon, Nathan Laughlin, Jay Patterson, Robert Pettit, Thomas Drake, and Aaron Riggs were the eight seniors that were honored in today's match against the Berea Mountaineers.

What a celebration it was, as the Scots defeated the Mountaineers 3-0. Though Mercer Stout has been out most of the 2022 season due to injury, Stout had his first game back this afternoon and made quite the impact right off the bat. Dribbling in past the Berea defenders, Stout drew a penalty resulting in a penalty kick. Chosen to take the penalty shot, Senior Jay Patterson laced one right in the top left corner of the goal to put the Scots up 1-0, just five minutes into the game.

With only a few short minutes left in the first half, Blake Myers found Kade Theunissen who saw the opening for Whitt Tisdale. Theunissen made a quick pass to Tisdale, which then resulted in Covenant's second goal of the night. Whitt Tisdale's goal against the Mountaineers was his seventh of the season.

Though the second half saw no goals for the first 23 minutes, the Scots were certainly active. Covenant put up 25 total shots on the day, 10 of which were on target. It was not until Blake Myers set Keegan Weekly up for an open shot in the 68th minute, that the Scots snagged their third and final goal of the night. Weekly's goal sealed the deal against the Mountaineers, and the Scots were able to walk away with a Senior Day victory.

Both Jay Patterson and Whitt Tisdale played terrific games this week. This past Wednesday, the Scots hosted a midweek match against the Birmingham Southern Panthers, where the senior and the freshman each scored one a-piece.

Whitt Tisdale scored on the Panthers early in the game, not even hitting the 10-minute mark. BSC answered with a goal of their own with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. With a costly penalty on the Panthers in the second half, the Scots capitalized and Jay Patterson put Covenant ahead 2-1 on a penalty kick, a lead that was held until the last 10 minutes of the game, when the roles were reversed and a penalty was called on the Scots. The Panthers seized the opportunity and caught up with the Scots, ending the game in a 2-2 draw.

Today (Saturday, October 22), Covenant Men's Soccer ended regular season with a win which most likely secured their place as the number two seed in the CCS heading into post season. More information will be released soon on collegiateconferenceofthesouth.com, the CCS website.

CCS Tournament play is set to commence on Wednesday, October 26.
