Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. In her statement, she emphasized the need for this change due to activities by Mexican cartels in the region. "Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic humans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else while the Mexican government allows them to do it," she stated.
Greene highlighted that American resources are used to secure these waterways for commerce and protect against military threats. "It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as," she added.
The congresswoman mentioned that her action followed an announcement by former President Trump, prompting her staff to draft the bill quickly. She submitted it with 14 original cosponsors. The proposed legislation mandates renaming federal documents and maps within 180 days after becoming law.
"This is a piece of Day 1 legislation that can easily be awaiting President Trump’s signature the moment he takes his oath of office," Greene said, urging colleagues for swift passage.
The bill's original cosponsors include Rep. Mary Miller (IL), Rep. Barry Moore (AL), Rep. Claudia Tenney (NY), Rep. Mike Collins (GA), Rep. Randy Weber (TX), Rep. Andy Ogles (TN), Rep. Mike Lawler (NY), Rep. Mike Haridopolos (FL), Rep. Greg Steube (FL), Rep. Eric Burlison (MO), Rep. Brian Babin (TX), Rep. Michael Rulli (OH), Rep. Troy Nehls (TX), and Rep. Brandon Gill (TX).
