FOIA Request to Walker County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 29, 2024.
As part of our ongoing commitment to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at NW Georgia News have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Walker County Election Department. The request, sent under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., seeks information about the methods being used by the department to count votes in the upcoming election.
In particular, we have asked for details on whether vote counting is being done manually or through automated systems. If manual counting is being employed, we have requested an estimate of the number of people who will be working on election night to process and tally votes.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await a response from the Walker County Election Department and will continue our efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in local government affairs.
