Covenant Women's Basketball suffered a heartbreaking loss last night after leading the majority of the match against Maryville. The Scots had recently returned from a New Year's Eve matchup against the Asbury Eagles on the road, falling to the Eagles 40-71 but eager for a chance to play again on their own home court.
The home faceoff between the Scots started as a series of traded baskets as the first quarter ended with a tied score of 14-14. Though Maryville was the first to score in the second quarter, the Covenant Scots answered with a three-pointer to put them ahead. The Scots then proceeded to go on a 12-0 run to take a 10-point lead on the game.
Maryville worked their way back into the match to end the second quarter trailing by five. As the Covenant Scots returned to the court for the second half, they continued to defend their lead, not allowing Maryville the chance to tie up the score. The quarter was led by Karis McIntosh's sharp shooting, draining three three-pointers.
However, a late steal led to Maryville coming within three points as the third quarter came to a close. Maryville's head coach Darrin Travillian said to his team, "You win the quarter, you win the game," and that is exactly what they did.
After a fast break to tie up the score, Maryville's high-scorer on the night, Courtney Carruthers, made the basket that tipped the scales in Maryville's direction. From that point on, Covenant was unable to gain back the lead, falling 54-66.
Karis McIntosh was the top scorer for the Scots with 14 points. Closely following, Cosette Kirsch added in 13 of her own. Forward Abby Witt chipped in seven points and led in rebounds on the night, grabbing seven.
McIntosh and Witt also led the Scots against the Eagles both tallying eight points a-piece. Additionally, Abby Witt added six boards to lead the night on rebounds.
