Scots Fall to Tough Opponents Following UTC Exhibition

Following an outstanding win in their first home game of the season, the Covenant men's basketball team began a three-game road stretch against who looks to be their three toughest opponents of the season. Taking on two Division I programs, UTC and Lipscomb, as well as Emory, all within a four-day span, the Scots dropped all three games to move their season record to 2-5.

Traveling to the base of Lookout Mountain into the city of Chattanooga, the Scots took on the Mocs of UTC for the second consecutive season. Covenant, despite keeping the score closer than the previous year, fell to UTC by a score of 108-55.

While in the first half the Scots were outscored by a margin of 47 points, Covenant was able to tally 41 points to UTC's 47 in the second half.

Junior forwards Eli Witt and Jonathan Gernatt, as well as sophomore guard Charlie Hester, all led Covenant in points with eight a-piece. Hester also led the squad in rebounds for the game, all five of which came on the defensive end.

After a quick day off, the Scots hopped right back on the road as they traveled to Lipscomb to face off against the Bisons. The Scots remain winless against Lipscomb in their matchup history after Covenant was defeated 86-61 on Monday, November 21.

Eli Witt was yet again the leading scorer for the Scots as he racked up ten points and four rebounds in only twelve minutes of play. Senior forward Promise Igbanu also ended his night with nine points and two rebounds in twelve minutes as well.

While only one player for the Scots was able to score double digit points, Head Coach Josh Brown utilized the opportunity to get his reserves involved. Seven different underclassmen for Covenant were able to play ten or more minutes throughout the game, several of whom set career highs for minutes played in a single game.

The following day, Covenant packed up and headed south to Atlanta, Georgia where they battled against the Emory Eagles in a return to Division III play–– Emory no less of a competitor as the Eagles have been nationally ranked consistently over years past. In the 7:30 PM contest, the Scots struggled to find a shooting rhythm, converting on only 37.3% of their field goal attempts.

With a final score of 63-97, the Scots fell to the Eagles for their third road game in a row. CCS's Rookie of the Week, Malcolm Noel, led the Scots with 14 points in the contest. Promise Igbanu matched Noel's offensive performance with 14 points of his own while also tallying four assists, three rebounds, and a pair of both blocks and steals.

Following a week-long break, Covenant will return home to Lookout Mountain in order to take on the visiting Tigers of Sewanee. The contest will take place in Barnes P.E. Center with a start time of 7:00 PM.
