Six-Run Seventh Lifts Baseball to Series Win

Playy

Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

It was another day of back-and-forth action as the Covenant baseball team used a six-run seventh inning, all with two outs, to take down Maryville, 10-9.

The win helped Covenant (15-17, 7-8 USA South) take the conference series.

Covenant struck first, scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning of play. Singles from Kenny Mills and Josh Harvey on top of a double from Zeke Gilbert quickly made it 2-0.

Maryville added a run to the board in their half of the second (2-1). But, the host Scots would extend the lead once again in the bottom of the inning, scoring another two runs off a wild pitch and a two-RBI single from Gilbert (4-1).

But Maryville answered with three runs in the top of the third, knotting the score at four runs apiece. The visiting Scots used three hits including a home run from Jimmy Meredith that made it 4-4.

From there, Maryville would take a four-run lead, as Covenant would not record a hit until the seventh inning.

After tacking on the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth (5-4), Maryville added three more to the board in the sixth (8-4), two of which came thanks to back-to-back doubles from Nelson Smith and Zac Graham.

The bats finally came alive for the host Scots once again in the bottom of the seventh as they would connect on seven hits to score six runs, all with two outs on the board.

A two-RBI double from Tyler Cox got the scoring rally started, making it 8-6. A double from Joseph Ridenour then brought Covenant within one (8-7), followed by a single from Andrew Brock which tied it up, 8-8.

With Brock on base, Trevor Grapenthin then launched a home run over the left field fence, putting Covenant up, 10-8.

Maryville would tack on one more run in the bottom of the eighth, making it a one-run game heading into the final inning (10-9).

A single from Smith put the tying run on base for the visiting Scots in the ninth. But, closing pitcher Conor Austin would record back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and seal the 10-9 victory.

Mills, Gilbert, Harvey, Ridenour, and Grapenthin all tallied two hits apiece. Cox and Grapenthin both had two RBIs. Relief pitcher Jackson Rau (2-0) picked up the win after recording three strikeouts and zero earned runs in two innings pitched.

Austin earned his second save of the season, striking out four in two innings.

Smith went 4-of-6 with two RBIs, while Meredith was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Damian Lusby (5-3) was handed the loss after allowing three earned runs in 0.0 innings.

Maryville falls to 7-5 in conference play (22-10 overall).
