Dalton Public Schools recently issued the following announcement.
City Park School recently celebrated their first Jasmine Day in remembrance of the late Yasmin Singh, a long-time Dalton Public Schools special education paraprofessional who passed away from cancer in late 2021.
“Mrs. Yasmin was passionate about helping students learn and be successful,” Assistant Principal Kapua Keefe said. “She was one of the most caring persons that you would meet and was a friend to everyone. She always wore a smile and made sure every student was loved and accepted.”
To celebrate the life and impact of Singh, City Park invited the Dalton High Java Cats to serve coffee to teachers and staff throughout the morning. Additionally, students painted story-walk signs, a project funded by a Dalton Education Foundation Grant, with a page of a book on each sign to be placed along the sidewalk.
Finally, they planted Jasmine plants in the school’s courtyard in Singh’s honor.
To commemorate the day, Keefe presented the first Jasmine Award to paraprofessional Nate Dunlap.
“Mrs. Yasmin’s positivity, inclusivity and kindheartedness radiated throughout City Park School,” Keefe said. “To honor her legacy, we have named the Jasmine Award in her honor. This award will be given at the end of each quarter to a staff member that resembles the qualities of Mrs. Yasmin Singh.”
As part of City Park’s PAWSabilities Month and Autism Acceptance Month, Dunlap created a video discussing his personal journey with Autism which was shared with students and staff.
Keefe said Dunlap advocates for his students, especially those with autism, and places inclusivity and kindness above everything else.
“This paraprofessional has overcome so many obstacles to be here today,” Keefe said. “He emanates positivity and inclusivity. He is kind to everyone that he meets and greets everyone with a smile.”
To inaugurate the award and conclude the ceremony, Keefe and Principal Kim Rhyne invited students and staff to plant the first Jasmine plants.
