Go

Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

Lauren Kay hit four homers and totaled nine RBIs as she helped the Covenant softball team pick up their third USA South sweep this season on their hot-hitting day at Berea.

The Scots totaled 38 hits and six home runs between the two contests, as they would take game one 10-4 and game two 14-3.

The wins extend Covenant's streak, as they have now won four in a row and six of their last seven.

GAME ONE: Covenant 10, Berea 4

The Scots recorded three homers in game one to earn the six-run victory. Two came off the bat of Kay, while the other came from Cope Whitaker.

Whitaker's home run came in the first inning, helping Covenant take an early lead.

After Kay doubled and Vanessa Davis singled, Whitaker launched one out of the park, giving the Scots a quick 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers would then cut the deficit to one, tacking on one run in both the first and second innings (3-2).

But Kay would quickly extend the Scots the lead once again in the top of the fourth with her first homer of the day. With one runner on thanks to a Berea error, the freshman's home run gave Covenant a 5-2 lead.

Kay's second home run came two innings later in the sixth when Covenant would rally and score four runs off of five hits.

On top of Kay's homer, the Scots recorded four singles, helping them take a 9-2 lead after six innings of play. Kay would then produce yet another RBI in the top of the seventh, extending the lead to eight (10-2).

Doubles from Savannah Fallis and Ashley Spencer would add two runs to the board for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the seventh. But, the Scots would then record three quick outs to seal the 10-4 victory.

Kay finished a perfect 5-for-5 with two homers, five RBIs, and three runs scored. The five hits ties the program record for hits in a single game. Whitaker went 3-of-5 with four RBIs. Davis was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Lauren Kierpa pitched the entirety of the contest for the Scots, striking out five.

Hayleigh Gnagie led Berea, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Madison McIntosh got the start in the circle and recorded three strikeouts and six earned runs in five innings pitched.

GAME TWO: Covenant 14, Berea 3

Covenant continued their hot-hitting in game two, as they dominated the host Mountaineers, 14-3.

In game two, the Scots totaled three homers and 22 hits, as Kay added two home runs and four more RBIs to her totals for the day.

Covenant jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI-single from Taylor Murdock and a two-RBI home run off the bat of Rebecca Hazard.

The Scots then recorded a nine-run second inning, using 10 hits to take a 12-0 lead.

The rally started with a single from Mary Elaine Mitchell, which was followed by a two-RBI homer from none other than Kay (5-0). It was the freshman's third two-RBI home run of the day.

Davis then singled and was brought around to score thanks to a double from Hazard (6-0). The Scots would then add four runs to the board off of four consecutive RBI-singles, giving them a 10-0 lead.

The singles were immediately followed by a double from Kay and a two-RBI single from Murdock, extending the lead to 12 (12-0).

Berea would score twice over the next two innings, cutting the lead to 10 (12-2). But, Kay would quickly make it 14-2 in the fourth with her second two-RBI home run of the game (fourth of the day).

The Mountaineers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth; but it was not enough to stay alive, as the Scots ran away with the 14-3 run-rule victory.

Kay once again finished perfect, going 4-of-4 with four RBIs and two homers, bringing her season home run total to nine. Murdock and Hazard both were 3-for-4 with three RBIs each. Mitchell was also 3-of-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Madison McDonald got the start in the circle for the Scots, pitching three innings and recording one strikeout and two earned runs. Maggie Harris pitched two innings of relief, striking out one.

McIntosh and Fallis both were 2-of-3 for Berea. Autumn Adams started at pitcher, allowing nine earned runs in three innings pitched.

The Scots improve to 8-2 in conference play (18-11 overall), while the Mountaineers fall to 3-9 (10-17 overall).
