Acworth Intermediate School issued the following announcement on August 17.

For the second year in a row, Emerson Commercial and Residential Solutions has generously supported the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs in Cobb Schools.

The Emerson Charitable Trust recently donated $15,000 to benefit STEM in Cobb Schools. These funds are being used to support teacher professional learning in STEM as well as student competitions.

There are plans to expand the partnership beyond financial support and develop educational resources that teach students about the work done by Emerson, which is responsible for ensuring food safety for grocery stores and restaurants through refrigeration monitoring services and more.

“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the amazing people at Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions. Any time we can make learning more meaningful and relevant to students by featuring local businesses is a win for us,” said Dr. Sally Creel, Cobb Schools STEM and Innovation Supervisor.

In the first collaboration session between the Cobb Schools STEM team and Emerson, they discussed developing resources around the lifecycle of a banana.

“It sounds a little silly, but bananas are the number one global agricultural crop in the world. How cool will it be for our students to learn how bananas get to their local grocery store?  We know that our students find the learning more engaging when they know that the people, products, resources are just down the street,” Dr. Creel explained.

According to Dr. Michelle Mikes, Cobb Schools Math Supervisor, the data Emerson is sharing will be great to integrate into math classes.

Cobb Schools Science Supervisor Christian Cali agrees that the partnership with Emerson will add a lot to the learning resources the team develops.

“The amazing team at Emerson is partnering with us to help students understand what STEM looks like in the real world. It is so great for our students to see what real-world STEM and Innovation looks like outside of the classroom,” he said.
