Statewide, public school enrollment in Georgia topped 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education's Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Most enrollments were in elementary grades with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 in middle school (22.7%), and 539,092 in high school (31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant challenge in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education said. To address this, the GaDOE introduced a statewide initiative that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, awareness campaigns, and additional support for districts with greater needs to increase daily attendance.
In 2025, legislation was adopted in Georgia to update school attendance rules, prohibiting expulsion based solely on absenteeism. The new law also adds extra reporting and harmonizes with programs offering alternative diploma pathways.
As of 2026, Georgia maintained a roughly 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio, an improvement over the national figure of 15:1.
