Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced the English Language Unity Act of 2025, a legislative proposal that aims to establish English as the official language of the United States. The bill is endorsed by former President Trump and co-led by Representative Josh Brecheen. It seeks to ensure that all official government functions are conducted in English and enforces an English language requirement for naturalization.
Greene emphasized the importance of this legislation by stating, “The Declaration of Independence. The Constitution. The Bill of Rights. All of our most sacred founding documents were written in English. It is the language of our Founding Fathers and the language spoken by nearly all Americans today." She added that making English the official language is crucial for restoring unity and shared culture in America.
Brecheen also expressed his support, saying, "When our ancestors drew forth a nation from a vast continent, they were speaking English; when Americans tamed the West, we spoke English; when Americans conquered the Moon, we did so speaking English."
The proposed act mandates that all government proceedings, documents, and naturalization ceremonies be conducted in English. It also requires citizenship applicants to demonstrate proficiency in reading key founding documents like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
The bill has several original co-sponsors including Representatives Paul Gosar, Mike Collins, Mary Miller, and Brandon Gill. A companion bill has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio.
