Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced the Matthew Lawrence Perna Act of 2024, named after a victim of what she describes as unjust treatment by the Department of Injustice under President Joe Biden. The legislation aims to address the perceived political persecution seen in the aftermath of the events of January 6th.

In a statement, Congresswoman Greene highlighted the key provisions of the Matthew Lawrence Perna Act, which include prohibiting the detention of nonviolent political protesters, ensuring fair and speedy trials, limiting government surveillance, establishing consistent sentencing guidelines, and enabling the transfer of venue for criminal trials of nonviolent political protestors in Washington, D.C.

Speaking about the need for reform, Congresswoman Greene expressed, "Having personally witnessed the abuses in the DC jail, where patriotic Americans are left to suffer by the very government meant to protect them, it is evident that reform is urgently needed."

The tragic death of Matthew Perna is cited as a driving force behind the legislation, with Congresswoman Greene asserting that his life could have been saved if not for what she views as unwarranted persecution by the Biden administration.

The introduction of the Matthew Lawrence Perna Act comes in response to what Congresswoman Greene perceives as a flawed and biased justice system that unfairly targets American citizens. She criticized the Department of Injustice for its treatment of January 6th defendants, while violent individuals from other groups like Antifa and BLM allegedly escape accountability.

Originally introduced in the 117th Congress by former Congressman Louie Gohmert, Congresswoman Greene was the sole co-sponsor of the legislation. Now leading the charge in the 118th Congress, she is calling on her colleagues to support the bill and prevent the inhumane treatment of peaceful protestors in the future.
