OUTLOOK (will update as needed)

From the National Weather Service -

Update

from: The National Weather Service in Atlanta Ga - Heavy Rainfall in Central Georgia / Snow Potential Saturday Night-Sunday Morning

Overview

  • Prolonged rain through Sunday will bring 2-4 inches of rainfall, on average, to portions of Central Georgia. The heaviest rainfall is likely to occur in areas south and east of the Macon area. Locally higher amounts may be possible where heavy rains from thunderstorms persist for prolonged periods.
  • A  Marginal Risk (1 on a 0-5 scale)  for Severe Thunderstorms exists for portions of Central Georgia this afternoon.
  • Periods of wintry precipitation will be possible across North and portions of Central Georgia Saturday night through Sunday morning, mainly north of a line from Columbus to Macon to Augusta. Precipitation could fall in the form of cold rain and melting snow, but accumulations are expected to be limited outside of the higher elevations of North Georgia with overnight low temperatures in the mid 30s.
Heavy Rainfall / Storm Potential

  • 0.25" to 1" of rain fell yesterday, mainly across central portions of the forecast area.
  • The axis of heavier rain will move into Central Georgia today, with 3 Day forecast rainfall totals through Sunday between 2-4 inches for portions of Central Georgia (see graphic below).
  • A cold front is expected to stall across the southeastern portions of the forecast area today, which will concentrate higher rainfall totals in areas south and east of Macon/Dublin.
  • Locally higher rainfall values over 4 inches will be possible where heavy rain showers and thundestorms persist for long periods of time. This may lead to isolated flooding concerns, especially in low-lying or urbanized areas.
  • Isolated thunderstorms will also be possible today throughout central Georgia, with a  Marginal Risk (1 on a 0-5 scale)  for severe thunderstorms across the furthest southeastern portions of the forecast area.
    • The primary severe risk is expected to be further south, across Southern Georgia, however, there is a chance an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm or two moves into the forecast area.
    • The primary hazard any of these storms will be heavy rain and damaging wind gusts.
Wintry Weather Saturday Night / Sunday Morning

  • A lot of uncertainty exists with this forecast with many winter weather forecast parameters lying right at critical thresholds, and warming and cooling processes both at play.
    • Please stay aware of changes to this forecast going forward
  • Additionally, there may be a big difference between how much snow could FALL, versus how much snow may STICK/ACCUMULATE. So be aware of sensationalized forecasts on social media as these differences can be easily misinterpreted.
  • On Saturday night through Sunday morning, an upper-level, cutoff, low pressure system will be swinging across the forecast area.
    • Colder mid-level air associated with the center of this low pressure will support wintry precipitation.
    • Upper-level, cutoff, low pressure systems are notoriously hard to predict! Questions remain about location and strength of this system, and as a result there's a lot of uncertainty with this system.
  • Timing: The best potential appears to be Midnight - 10 AM Sunday for the majority of the forecast area. Areas in the NE Georgia Mnts could see wintry precip from 7 PM Saturday through 2 PM Sunday.
  • Precipitation will likely start as very cold rain, but eventually transition to a rain/snow mix, or wet snow will be possible.
  • Surface temperatures will be generally above freezing and into the mid to upper 30s (except in the mountains where accumulations are more likely) which will make snow accumulations difficult outside the higher elevations, as snow will be melting as it reaches the ground.
    • However, the longer snowfall occurs the colder temperatures may become, making slight accumulations possible the longer snowfall persists.
    • Currently 0.5-3" is expected on the highest elevations within the NE Georgia Mtns, with a dusting possible across the rest of North and portions of Central Georgia north of a line from Columbus to Macon to Augusta.
    • Ground/Road temperatures should generally remain above freezing, but isolated slick spots will be possible.
  • High temperatures on Sunday in the upper 40s to near 50 should melt any residual wintry precipitation that falls.
