AdventHealth Shawnee Mission has completed the first phase of renovations to its original hospital tower built in 1972. The $30 million renovation encompasses all patient rooms, corridors, staff areas and exterior of the second, third, fourth and fifth floors, including units for short stay, medical/surgical, oncology and orthopedic care.
The remodel was designed to improve functionality for nurses and providers, with new custom-built work stations, staff hoteling spaces and physician offices on inpatient units. The space will also be a major improvement for patients and families, with upgraded flooring, lighting, ceilings, headwalls, bathrooms, HVAC and floor-to-ceiling windows in each patient room.
“We know environment is an important factor in the experience of patients, families and our team members who use the space every day,” said Michael Knecht, president of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “With these upgrades to our Shawnee Mission hospital campus, the physical space better aligns with the exceptional care we provide.”
Construction began in early 2022 of the north side of the tower, which will be complete in early February 2023. Once each unit has transitioned into the renovated space, phase two of construction on the south side will begin. The project is expected to be complete by November 2023. Phase two will include the same upgrades to staff areas, patient rooms and exterior and will also include renovations of family waiting areas and elevator lobbies to improve the visitor experience.
The project will add new spacious bariatric and accessible rooms to each unit and 11 additional inpatient beds to the tower. Other updates include new stacking and plumbing, improved flow and security access and emergency power to all areas.
To design, build and develop the upgraded facility, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission partnered with McCarthy, U.S. Engineering, P1 Electrical, Allied Construction, Color Inc., Regents Flooring and Core Communications.
AdventHealth has invested significantly in improving and growing its Shawnee Mission campus in recent years. The first floor of the original hospital tower was renovated in 2016, including a new cafeteria and conference space. The B.E. Smith Family Center and Gateway Medical Office Building were added to the Shawnee Mission campus in 2019. In 2022, construction began on the new AdventHealth Cancer Institute, which will open in 2024 along with a transformation of the hospital’s outpatient entrance and service areas.
