Sewanee Breaks Men’s Soccer’s Winning Streak at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Covenant men's soccer team has had quite the exciting few games at home these past two weeks. Last week, the Scots faced Asbury on Tuesday, September 20th and Huntingdon for Homecoming this past Saturday (Sept. 24). This week, Covenant Men's Soccer saw Sewanee on Tuesday (Sept. 27) and Warren Wilson tonight (Sept. 29). These four games marked the first games at home that the Scots have played all season, putting their home record at 3-1, winning against all but Sewanee.

Against the Asbury Eagles, Jay Patterson scored his third goal of the season early in the first half at 10:32. After the Eagles fouled Mercer Stout forcing a penalty kick, the Scots were given the perfect position to get on the board early in the game. Patterson seized the opportunity and strategically placed the penalty kick to put Covenant ahead. With only two minutes left in the first half, Asbury's Ryan Kim answered for the Eagles to even the score.

This week's Rookie of the Week, Whitt Tisdale, fought to give the Scots an advantage in minute 53 of the game. Tisdale went on to score an unassisted goal, his second of the season, to put the Scots up 2-1.

With three minutes left to go, Kade Theunissen found Luke Laughlin for Covenant's third and final goal on the night. The Scots were able to close out the game against the Eagles 3-1. Will Hicks made three saves on the night, while Asbury's goalkeeper, Collin McKibben made four saves. The Scots out-shot the Eagles 13-6.

During the match-up against the Huntingdon Hawks on Saturday, Covenant came out victorious once again. The back-and-forth goals between the Scots and the Hawks led to a high-scoring, exciting game for Alumni, students, and fans to watch–– the perfect ending to a great Homecoming weekend.

Huntingdon's Thad Lievens became the Scots worst nightmare. For every goal the Scots scored prior to the 65-minute mark, Lievens was there to follow. Lievens ended with all three of the Hawks' goals.

Two of the Scots' starters scored twice a-piece in the Homecoming match-up. Whitt Tisdale and Mercer Stout, combined, gave Covenant four goals. Tisdale scored the very first goal of the game, as well as the very last. The first, assisted by Nathan Laughlin, and the second, unassisted. Keegan Weekly put up the second Scots' goal after Blake Myers found Weekley in the 42nd minute. Mercer Stout then snagged back-to-back goals to bring Stout to five goals on the season. Stout was assisted by Kade Theunissen on his first goal and Griffin Felton on his second. What an eventful night it was for the Scots.

However, the Scots came to a halt when they faced the Sewanee Tigers. The Tigers are now 7-1 after their defeat over Covenant at home, with their only loss being credited to No. 3 Washington and Lee. David Edge was assisted by Payne Gridley, while Will Hawgood was assisted by Tyler Cozzie in the Sewanee Win. Covenant's Will Hicks had three saves on the night.

But tonight, the Scots were back to their winning ways after a 4-0 shutout of Warren Wilson. All Covenant goals were scored in the first half. Kade Theunissen snagged his second goal of the season and was the first to put the Scots on the board. Whitt Tisdale scored the second unassisted goal of the night, his fifth of the season. Luke Laughlin then sealed the deal with his back-to-back goals for the Scots. L. Laughlin's first goal was unassisted, but his second was assisted by Thomas Drake, who found Laughlin late in the first half.

Though the Scots had a scoreless second half, they were not shy on attacking. Covenant put up 25 shots, with 12 on goal. For the Owls, Parker Davis had eight great saves, but Davis' heroics were not enough to stop the Scots.

Covenant Men's Soccer travels this weekend for their second conference game. The Scots will face LaGrange at 2:00 PM, October 1st.      CONNECT WITH THE SCOTS
