Volleyball Secures Key Wins, Splits in Tri-Match

Covenant Volleyball secured a much-needed win at home this past Tuesday, September 20th. With a 3-1 win over Berea (28-26, 25-18, 25-27, 25-22), the Scots remain undefeated at home this season.

In a thrilling back-and-forth match, the Scots were able to overcome the pressure and finish the first, second, and fourth set. Covenant was leading majority of the third set, but Berea found some fire to keep the game alive. At 18-18, Berea took the lead for the first time within the set and held it until 22-22. There were several lead changes late in the game, but it was Berea that came away with set three in the end.

It was a block party for the Scots for this conference opener. Grace Logterman shut down Berea at the net and notched a career-high of 12 blocks, while Summer Johnson-Northcutt added 8. When Logterman and Northcutt did not get the stop, Anna Baldwin and Kelsey Carman were there defensively, tallying 19 digs and 18 digs, respectively.

Kelsey Carman had quite the night, recording herself a double-double. The outside hitter had 10 kills to go along with her 18 digs. Rachel Bartlett also hit a double-double with 48 assists and 13 digs. Second in kills, Kyla Bailey is the third Scot of the night to hit a double-double, 14 kills and 10 digs attributed to Bailey.

Emma Kalbfleisch led the Scots offensively with 16 kills, Bailey close to follow with her 14. For Berea, Deanna De La Torre led the team with 14 kills, while Fabiana De'Jesus and Anneliz Cora led the team 20 kills each, the match high.

This past weekend, the Covenant volleyball team traveled to Mississippi on Friday and then to Birmingham, Alabama to play in a tri-match hosted by Huntingdon. The Scots defeated MUW in four and split their matches on Saturday, sweeping Agnes Scott but not being able to overcome the Huntingdon Hawks.

For the Friday match against the Owls, Kyla Bailey and Rachel Bartlett registered double-doubles once again. Bailey, leading alongside Grace Logterman with 13 kills each, also recorded 19 digs. Bartlett grabbed 37 assists and 14 digs. The libero, Anna Baldwin, led in digs, putting 20 on the board.

Against Huntingdon, Emma Kalbfleisch led offensively, answering with 16 kills and only three errors. Kalbfleisch hit .419 for the night, an outstanding percentage. Grace Logterman hit .381 and followed closely behind with 10 kills. Kyla Bailey also added 10 kills.

Defensively, Rachel Bartlett and Amber Snook led the pack, Bartlett with 11 digs and Snook with 10. Bartlett also tallied 46 assists and recorded her third double-double in a row.

The Scots then took Agnes Scott in three. Covenant will host LaGrange and Piedmont this weekend at home. The games will be at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM tomorrow, Saturday, October 1st.
