Baseball Collects Second Straight ABCA Academic Honor

For a second straight year, the Covenant baseball program was recognized as a Team Academic Excellence Award recipient by the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) for their work in the classroom.

Covenant was one of four USA South teams honored, joining Brevard, Methodist, and Piedmont.

Under head coach Doug Simons, the Scots had a 3.21 team GPA during the fall 2021 semester and followed that with a 3.11 GPA in the spring. The team led all Covenant programs with 17 USA South All-Academic selections, the third-most for the program since joining the conference. Senior catcher Josh Harvey became program's first CoSIDA Academic All-America selection as he earned first team honors.

Covenant finished 2022 with a 22-19 overall record and earned a trip to the USA South Tournament.

To be eligible for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, teams must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA over the entire academic year. The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Sports Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
