Mellott Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

Mellot

Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

Covenant men's cross country and track and field junior Ben Mellott was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District® team, announced the organization on Thursday.

Mellott becomes the first Covenant male cross country or track and field athlete to garner the prestigious honor. He is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® recognition.

The Academic All-District teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. In order to be nominated for this award, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher and be a significant contributor to their team. The ballot is then voted on by various Sports Information personnel within the district.

A junior from University Place, Wash., Mellott had another standout season on the trails and on the track for the Scots. Mellott earned All-USA South third team honors in cross country after placing 15th overall at the conference meet. In outdoor track, Mellott earned third team All-USA South recognition in the 5,000-meter event. He also set the program record in the outdoor track 5,000-meter run at 15:18.09 at the Lee University Last Chance meet on May 14.

Mellott is a two-time All-USA South honoree in cross country and has also earned All-USA South honors twice in track and field. He was the USA South West Division meet champion in cross country at the spring 2021 meet.

Majoring in pre-engineering, Mellott holds a 3.93 GPA. He became a three-time USA South All-Academic selection this year, earning the honor with distinction (3.90 semester GPA in both terms) for the second time in his career. Mellott is a six-time member of the Covenant Dean's List and Athletic Honor Roll (3.5 semester GPA).
