Women's Tennis to Face Southern Virginia in USA South Tourney

Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

Back in the USA South Tournament for the first time since 2018, the No. 2 West seed Covenant women's tennis team will face No. 3 East seed Southern Virginia on Thursday in the quarterfinals at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.

Match time is set for 11 a.m.

The winner moves on to face either No. 1 East seed Averett or No. 4 West seed Brevard on Friday at 10 a.m. in the semifinals. The championship is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. The entire tournament takes place at the Rome Tennis Center.

TOURNAMENT NOTES

  • Covenant (11-9, 6-1 USA South) finished second in the USA South West Division. The Scots enter the tournament having won six of the last eight matches.
  • The Scots will be making their sixth appearance in a USA South Tournament. Covenant has advanced to the championship round twice and the Scots are 4-5 all-time in the tournament.
  • Covenant and Southern Virginia will meet for the first time on the court. The only common opponent the teams share this year is Roanoke -- which both the Scots and Knights defeated by 8-1 scores.
  • Madelyn Savage leads the Scots with 12 singles wins on the year, all of which have come at the top flight. She went 6-1 against USA South foes in the regular season and earned USA South Player of the Week honors on March 21. 
  • Nicole Restrepo and Lauren Carr have also had strong seasons for the Scots. Restrepo is second on the team with nine singles wins, while the freshman Carr has eight. Carr also leads the team with 11 doubles wins and she and Restrepo are 9-6 as a tandem.
  • Southern Virginia (9-3, 7-2 USA South) is making its debut in the USA South Tournament as the Knights are in their first year as conference members.
  • The Knights have claimed wins in seven of their last eight contests, with the only loss coming in a 5-4 defeat to No. 1 East seed Averett. Paula Snelson is the top Knight as she owns an 11-1 reocrd at the No. 1 spot.
