Baseball Suffers Two One-Run Losses to Brevard

Baseball

Covenant College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

The Covenant baseball team could not keep the momentum going after Friday's series-opening win over Brevard as the visiting Tornados took a pair of one-run contests on Saturday in USA South action.

Covenant had its rally in game one fall short in a 6-5 loss and Brevard claimed the series win with an 8-7, comeback, win in the finale.

Covenant drops to 10-15 overall and 2-7 in the USA South.

GAME ONE: Brevard 6, Covenant 5

A six-run fourth inning propelled Brevard to a 6-5 win in Saturday's opener.

The Tornados scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning as the visitors sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times on five hits, while taking advantage of two Covenant errors. The big inning erased a 1-0 Covenant lead.

The Scots got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Ken Burke produced an RBI single that plated George Manera to get Covenant within 6-2. It was one of three Burke RBI singles on the day as he finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

In the sixth, the Scots got a little closer when Harrison Adelgren launched a two-run homer to left field, his third of the year, to make it 6-4. Tyler Cox nearly tied the game in the seventh, but his long fly ball to left field was caught just steps from the fence to end the inning.

Burke was at it again in the eighth as he drove in Trevor Grapenthin with a single to make it 6-5. Kenny Mills led off the ninth with a single, but Brevard turned a game-ending double play to stave off the Scots' rally.

Zach Tolleson (0-1) got the loss for the Scots as he went 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs. Aaron Northcutt was sharp in his relief outing going 5.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out six.

Covenant had 14 hits in the game, with three apiece from Burke and Manera. Mills, McKaleb Harlemon, and Grapenthin all had two hits each. Zeke Gilbert extended his hitting streak to 15 games in the win.

Nathan Sanders (4-0) got the win for Brevard after going six innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs. Bryce Bowers collected the save.

GAME TWO: Brevard 8, Covenant 7

The Scots trailed until the seventh inning and then saw Brevard rally back with a three-run ninth inning as the Tornados took the rubber game, 8-7.

Down 4-0 after three innings, Covenant manufactured a comeback over the next four innings. Adelgren drove in two runs with his single in the fourth inning to make it 4-2. In the fifth, Joseph Ridenout tripled home Harlemon as the Scots got within 5-3.

In the seventh, Covenant took its first lead of the game. Mills led off the inning with the first of two homers in the game for the junior, a solo shot to center field. Later in the frame, Chase McBryar doubled home Harlemon to even the score at 5-5. Adelgren followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Andrew Brock giving the Scots a 6-5 lead.

Mills added to the lead in the eighth with another solo home run. He leads the team with six home runs on the year.

Brevard (16-10, 5-4 USA South) had the final answer in the ninth. The Tornados scored three runs, on just one hit, as the Covenant pitching could not hold the lead. Logan Clark had the only hit in the frame as his double to left brought in a run to make it 7-6. A Covenant error on the next batter allowed Clark to scamper home with the tying run.

A wild pitch, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk followed to bring in the go-ahead score.

Covenant got two runners on in the ninth, but Bowers closed the door on the Scots getting the final two outs.

Mills went 3-for-5 with two homers and two RBIs, while Adelgren was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Ridenour also had two hits in the loss. Conor Austin (2-3) picked up the loss in relief. Judah O'Neal made the start for the Scots and went four innings.

Bowers (4-1) notched the win going the final two innings for the Tornados. Clark finished with three hits.
