U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the older adult population in the United States continues to rise, while the numbers of children are in decline. From 2020 to 2024, the count of Americans ages 65 and older climbed by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease among those under 18. America’s older adult population has soared since 1920—up from 4.9 million that year to over 61 million by 2024.
A study from 2021 finds that almost half of people in this age group, roughly 28 million, may need long-term services and supports. The research also predicts that over one third may require nursing home care at some point.

But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
