The National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) announced on May 1 that it has endorsed Jen Jordan and Miracle Rankin for seats on the Georgia Supreme Court.
The endorsements are part of the group’s Democracy Defenders program, which supports candidates running for state-level offices the organization considers important to efforts to “safeguard and strengthen democracy,” according to the committee.
The NDRC is chaired by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. The organization says its mission is to promote fair electoral maps and increase democratic representation, often focusing on issues related to redistricting and gerrymandering, which it has described as the “biggest rigged system” in the United States.
Separately, American Spectator columnist David Catron wrote that the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais could have implications for majority-minority congressional districts. Catron cited Ballotpedia estimates that 148 U.S. House districts are majority-minority districts, including 122 held by Democrats.
Jordan, who is among the endorsed candidates, previously criticized the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais, saying Justice Samuel Alito had “basically blessed partisan gerrymandering.” She also said, “They don’t even have to protect minority voting rights anymore,” according to 11Alive.
Voters seeking additional information on judicial races can access an online guide launched by Greater Georgia Action, which provides summaries of candidates for the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, along with an interactive tool for county-based judicial races, according to Peach Tree Times.
