After the pandemic, chronic absenteeism has continued to challenge Georgia schools, with 20.7% of students absent for at least 10% of the 2024 school days, the Georgia Department of Education reported. In response, the state launched a new initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, an awareness campaign, and increased resources for high-need areas.
Georgia lawmakers updated school attendance laws in 2025, now prohibiting expulsions solely due to absences. The revised law also brings in additional reporting obligations and supports programs that let students complete their diplomas through alternative methods.
Georgia’s average student-teacher ratio was around 14:1 in 2026, which compares favorably to the U.S. average of 15:1.
