For survivors of human trafficking, leaving exploitation is only the first step in a long process of recovery. CommonSpirit Health, in partnership with the Rebecca Bender Initiative, has released a new digital booklet aimed at supporting survivors as they navigate ongoing challenges.
The Trauma and Recovery booklet was developed through collaboration between the Rebecca Bender Initiative and CommonSpirit Health’s Human Trafficking Response Program. It addresses the difficulties survivors face after escaping trafficking and is designed to promote resilience, self-advocacy, and overall well-being.
“After nearly 16 years in the anti-trafficking field, I’ve seen firsthand how often survivors who step into leadership roles face burnout, isolation, compassion fatigue, and even re-exploitation,” said Rebecca Bender, CEO of Rebecca Bender Initiative. “I wish a resource like this had existed when I began my own leadership journey, something to help prepare me for the realities of the work and the importance of building self-care and community support around me.”
Human trafficking remains a significant issue globally. In 2024 alone, over 21,000 victims were identified in the United States by the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The trauma experienced by survivors often requires specialized intervention. The new booklet provides practical guidance to help survivor leaders avoid common problems and continue their work within their communities.
The resource guides survivors in understanding trauma, recognizing signs of stress, adopting healthier coping methods, preventing retraumatization by identifying triggers and using trauma-informed care principles daily. It also encourages effective self-advocacy and supports developing a personalized approach to healing.
“A foundational element of CommonSpirit’s mission, our Human Trafficking Response Program equips our medical professionals to identify and assist patients experiencing any form of abuse, including human trafficking,” said Holly Gibbs, system director for CommonSpirit Health’s Human Trafficking Response Program. “This new booklet for survivors takes that commitment a step further, putting healing resources directly into their hands, wherever they are on their journey.”
CommonSpirit’s Human Trafficking Response Program provides resources and training nationwide for healthcare professionals to better address human trafficking and other forms of abuse.
