CommonSpirit Health has reported significant progress in patient safety and quality across its network, according to a statement released on October 21, 2025. The organization, which is among the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States, attributes these improvements to a consistent and evidence-based approach.

“We are setting the bar high for quality and safety across CommonSpirit,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, SEVP, Chief Physician Executive Officer. “We want our patients to know they’re receiving the highest quality care when they step into one of our facilities.”

The health system highlighted several areas of improvement over recent years. More than 130,000 patients saw better blood pressure control and 35,000 improved their diabetes management through targeted education and treatment programs. Preventive care efforts resulted in 220,000 Medicare patients receiving wellness visits after being informed about their eligibility.

Annual measurements showed reduced mortality rates related to heart failure, stroke, and percutaneous coronary intervention. There was also a decrease in hospital-acquired infections and complications. Mental health initiatives led to earlier detection of maternal mood disorders as well as increased screening and follow-up for depression.

In 2025, CommonSpirit Health received national recognition for its achievements in quality and safety. The Leapfrog Group awarded A or B Hospital Safety Grades to 82% of CommonSpirit sites. U.S. News & World Report recognized 55 acute care hospitals within the system. Additionally, 43% of eligible CommonSpirit hospitals earned four or five stars from CMS—higher than the national average of 37%.

The organization also received several awards: it was named an American Hospital Association Quest for Quality Award Finalist; received the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award; won the 2025 ATA Nexus Transformational Leadership Award for its Virtual Integrated Care model; earned the American Medical Association Target: BP Gold+ Award; and was recognized by The American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes℠ Gold program.

“This is only the beginning,” said Dr. Phillip Chang, SVP and Chief Quality Officer at CommonSpirit Health. “ We will continue to accomplish great things and provide our patients and communities with safe, high quality care.”

CommonSpirit Health operates more than 2,300 clinics and care sites—including 138 hospital-based locations—and provides over 20 million patient encounters annually across 24 states.
