CommonSpirit Health has announced the appointment of Michael P. Browning as its new System Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, effective January 2, 2026. Browning will take over from Daniel Morissette, who is retiring after nearly ten years with the organization.

In his new role, Browning will be responsible for all financial operations at CommonSpirit Health. The health system operates 138 hospitals and more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. His duties will include overseeing financial strategy, planning, accounting, treasury, reimbursement, revenue cycle management, and investor relations.

Wright Lassiter III, CEO of CommonSpirit Health, commented on the appointment: “We are thrilled to welcome Michael to CommonSpirit Health. He is a seasoned financial leader with a profound understanding of complex healthcare systems and a proven track record of driving financial strength and strategic growth. His expertise and leadership will be invaluable as we work to navigate a complex and evolving healthcare landscape and deliver on our mission.”

Browning brings over three decades of experience in healthcare finance. Most recently he served as Executive Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer at OhioHealth. There he helped grow cash reserves from $4.9 billion to $8.6 billion and maintained high bond ratings during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also led strategies that resulted in 74% revenue growth, added six hospitals, and created 16 joint ventures.

Earlier in his career, Browning held senior roles at ProMedica Health System, WakeMed Health & Hospitals, Parkview Health, and McLeod Health. In these positions he worked on improving financial performance and executing growth initiatives in various non-profit health systems.

“I am honored to join CommonSpirit Health, an organization with an unwavering commitment to its mission and a truly impactful scale,” said Browning. “I look forward to collaborating with Wright and the entire leadership team to advance financial strategy, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure CommonSpirit Health is well-positioned for sustainable growth and continued service to our communities.”

Browning holds an MBA from the University of Louisville and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Kentucky Wesleyan College. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in Kentucky.

CommonSpirit Health is one of the largest nonprofit Catholic healthcare organizations in the United States. It delivers more than 20 million patient encounters each year through its network of clinics, care sites, hospitals, home-based services, and virtual care options. The organization employs over 160,000 people across 24 states.
