CommonSpirit Health was named one of America’s Most Innovative Companies for 2026 by Fortune Magazine, according to a Mar. 26 announcement. This marks the first time CommonSpirit has received this recognition, which reflects its ongoing efforts to reimagine care delivery across its network.
The recognition highlights the importance of innovation in healthcare and how new approaches can improve patient outcomes and staff experiences. CommonSpirit’s programs are designed to address both clinical quality and operational efficiency.
Among the innovations cited is Virtually Integrated Care (VIC), which brings virtual nurses into care teams to support bedside staff, mentor newer nurses, and connect patients with appropriate care solutions. The VIC model has resulted in a 43% reduction in first-year registered nurse voluntary turnover, a 37% reduction in certain hospital-acquired infections, a 20% increase in communication scores on patient surveys, and a 21% decrease in emergency department hold hours.
Another program called Care Base uses a virtual hospital model to ensure patients receive suitable care whether they are hospitalized or at home. This initiative operates across 286 facilities in 17 states and has helped more than 64,000 new patient transfers reach appropriate levels of care while preventing nearly 158,000 adverse events through its Virtual Companion program during fiscal year 2025.
CommonSpirit also uses robotic process automation for cancer screening. This technology reviews health histories and prepares screening orders for physician approval. Since implementation, compliance with screenings improved between 60% and 80%, with lung cancer screening rates rising from less than ten percent to ninety percent in some regions before being expanded system-wide.
Operational improvements include an Emergency Department Operations Dashboard that provides real-time data on key metrics linked with best practices. The dashboard led to reductions in door-to-doctor times by nearly ten percent and boarding times by over three percent while lowering the rate of patients leaving without being seen.
