CommonSpirit Health announced on May 14 that its hospitals have exceeded the national average in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 2026 Hospital Star Ratings for the sixth consecutive year.
The ratings are an important measure of hospital quality, helping patients and families make informed healthcare decisions. In 2026, 56% of CommonSpirit hospitals received a rating of four or five stars, compared to a national average of 42%. This is an increase from the previous year when only 43% of CommonSpirit hospitals achieved this distinction, while the national average was at 37%.
“Achieving and maintaining excellence in safe, high-quality care is the highest priority at CommonSpirit,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, SEVP and chief physician executive officer at CommonSpirit. “We are immensely proud of and grateful for our dedicated caregivers for their consistent commitment to exceptional patient-centered care. Their relentless pursuit of quality is the cornerstone of our mission to not only meet, but exceed, the highest standards for healthier communities and the well-being of every individual we serve.”
The CMS ratings summarize hospital performance across five domains: Mortality, Safety of Care, Readmission, Patient Experience, and Timely and Effective Care. For 2026, CommonSpirit’s average star rating was reported as 3.62—higher than the national hospital average of 3.20—and no CommonSpirit hospital received a one-star rating for three years running. Additionally, several facilities improved by two stars this cycle.
Dr. Phillip Chang, SVP and chief medical & quality officer at CommonSpirit said: “These impressive CMS Star Ratings reflect CommonSpirit Health’s unwavering dedication to providing high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to every patient we serve. While we are pleased with these results and our consistent upward trajectory, we know there is always room for improvement, and we are actively working to further enhance our patient outcomes and experiences.”
According to recent recognitions mentioned by CommonSpirit Health: “86% of eligible CommonSpirit hospitals received an A or B grade in Leapfrog’s Spring 2026 Safety Grades;” they also earned accolades such as “the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety Award,” “the ATA Nexus Leadership Award,” as well as finalist recognition from “the American Hospital Association’s AHA Quest for Quality Prize.” Over half their full-service acute care hospitals were recognized among America’s best by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list.
Chi Memorial Hospital Georgia featured hospitals as part of this system with three locations serving through multiple care sites—including freestanding outpatient imaging centers—and has been recognized for its commitment to quality according to the official website. Janelle Reilly served as president during this period.
