The Georgia Department of Education noted that chronic absenteeism continues to pose major challenges in Georgia’s schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024. The state agency responded with a new initiative that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, awareness campaigns, and targeted district support aimed at boosting daily attendance. See the initiative here.
In 2025, Georgia updated school attendance laws to prohibit expelling students solely for absenteeism. The measure established new reporting guidelines and coordination with programs that help students earn diplomas through alternative routes.
Georgia averaged a student-teacher ratio of 14:1 in 2026, which is stronger than the nationwide ratio of 15:1.
